His father owned a restoration, carpentry and upholstery business. In the workshop behind the house, Jaap was educated in the trade by his father. Between 1950 and 1958, he also studied sculpture, design and modelling at the Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences in Rotterdam. Duly, his first professions were cabinetmaker and restorer.
The very year that the fortified city Heusden celebrates its 700 years anniversary was an excellent opportunity for a festival dedicated to Jacob van Eyck, the city’s most famous dweller. Between Friday the 26th and Sunday the 28th of October, music by the blind composer born around 1590, who can be seen as trailblazing for carillon music and is world-renowned for his music for recorder, sounded all through the city. Admission to the festival was free of charge.
The 31st edition of Perpignans Sacred Music Festival will take place from March 9-20, 2019. The international interest for this festival is increasing year after year, with visitors coming from all over Europe.
A carillon concert is programmed each year during this festival with the Association of the Friends of the St. John the Baptist Cathedral Carillon. Since 2015, this dynamic partnership includes a carillon composition contest. For the third time, the Festival and the Friends of the Carillon invite you to participate in this carillon composition contest.
As part of the jubilee programme of the NKV, a masterclass “Composing for the Carillon” was organised in June 2018. The participants were invited to expand the existing repertoire for Carillon with an original composition on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the NKV.
The masterclass was given in June 2018, by the well-known composer and teacher Peter-Jan Wagemans. The 14 participants had already attended a workshop in April 2018, with Frans Haagen and Gijsbert Kok in order to learn all possibilities of the Carillon, including the different combinations of Carillon and other instruments or electronics.
At the beginning of this semester, Christian Winter started as lecturer at theH KU University of the Arts Utrecht (Netherlands Carillon School). His subject is of “Harmonics on the carillon”. This is a succinct, yet imprecise description to denote the “improvisation in classical style on given themes and melodies”. He succeeds Rien Donkersloot, who was unable to prolong his position due to time restrictions.

As in previous years, Beiaardcentrum Nederland and HKU Nederlandse Beiaardschool are organising six summer evening concerts on the carillon of the Onze-Lieve-Vrouwetoren. These concerts take place on Wednesdays from 20:00 to 21:00. Ten minutes before the start of each concert, the Amersfoort Bellringers Guild provide a festive prelude.
Last year, the nineteenth Congress of the World Carillon Federation took place in Barcelona in the first week of July. The city itself has one carillon situated on top of the Palau de Generalitat, the seat of the Catalan government. The bells hang in an open structure inspired by the crown of one of the towers of the adjacent cathedral. The listening venue inside the palace is very delightful.
On Tuesday, the 19th of June, several students of the HKU Nederlandse Beiaardschool performed their final or qualifying examination concerts on the Eijsbout-carillon at the Tower of Our Lady in Amersfoort.
On Monday, July 2, in the Michaels Chapel in the Utrecht Dom Tower, a collection of carillon music by Jacob van Eyck for carillonneurs and campanologists was presented. That portentous event was preceded by this year’s first summer evening concert organised by the ninety-year-old Utrecht Bell Ringing Association (UKV).
